The Real AI Shortage Is Memory, Not GPUs

Your next laptop just got about 20% more expensive. The reason is HBM, and HBM is a yield problem.

The biggest shortage in AI isn't NVIDIA's chips. It's the memory bolted right NEXT to them. And it's the reason your next laptop just got twenty percent more expensive. Here's what happened. Samsung, SK hynix, and Micron make ninety-five percent of the world's memory. They just swung NINETY-THREE percent of it to one thing — H-B-M, the stacked memory that feeds AI chips. It's sold out. All of 2026. Gone. Here's what nobody's telling you. This isn't a GPU problem you can fix by building fabs. It's a YIELD problem. H-B-M stacks SIXTEEN chips with microscopic wiring — and if ONE die is bad, the whole stack gets scrapped. One H-B-M bit eats THREE TIMES the wafer of normal RAM. So even swinging ninety-three percent of capacity can't catch up. OpenAI's Stargate alone wants nine hundred thousand wafers a month. The whole world makes three hundred fifty thousand. That's why your RAM is up ninety percent — AI ate the memory. And the winner isn't whoever builds the most fabs. It's whoever can hold YIELD on a sixteen-layer stack. Right now, that's SK hynix. The most valuable engineers in tech are the ones who control that yield. If you want to understand where AI actually bottlenecks — follow. I break one of these down every week.
