SK hynix just told the world its next chip factory will run itself… by 2030.
But here's what nobody's telling you. The AI was never the hard part.
Sounds unstoppable. <break time="0.5s" /> Then reality hits.
Gartner says FORTY percent of these agentic-AI projects get cancelled by 2027.
Why? <break time="0.5s" /> A fab needs DETERMINISTIC control. Agentic AI is probabilistic — it can fail in ways a recipe never could. Only ONE in FIVE companies has real governance for it.
So the wafer still runs a THOUSAND steps of advanced process control. And someone has to set the guardrails — decide how far the AI can act. That someone is the MES engineer. The autonomous fab doesn't retire you. It PROMOTES you — from running the line… to governing the intelligence that runs it.
If you actually want to understand how the self-driving factory really works — follow.
So — here's the tip of the day. Want to break into MES and AI? <break time="0.5s" /> Don't start with the AI. Start with ONE signal. Take one tool's sensor trace, and build one predictive model on it in Python. In a fab, the model is TWENTY percent of the job. The data plumbing is the other EIGHTY. Master that — and you're already ahead of the hype.

AI Agents Now Act on the Factory Floor. Only 1 in 3 MES Vendors Run It.
The MES is what keeps an agent in line. So who sets the guardrails?

The Real AI Shortage Is Memory, Not GPUs
Your next laptop just got about 20% more expensive. The reason is HBM, and HBM is a yield problem.

Who Holds the Override Switch?
Over 40% of agentic AI projects will be cancelled by 2027. Gartner named three causes, and the model is not one of them.
