SK hynix, Intel's Ohio Fab, and the Rule That Copies the Plumbing
A Chip Factory Is a Recipe, Not a Building. Here Is Who Carries It.

A chip factory is not a building. It is a recipe, and the hard part is carrying it.
On 16 September 2026 Reuters said SK hynix, the biggest maker of AI memory chips, may make chips inside Intel's $28 billion plant in Ohio.
Intel's shares rose that day. But the Ohio plant does not open before 2030, and SK hynix said nothing is decided.
A chip factory is a recipe of hundreds of steps, tuned by thousands of engineers over years. The building only keeps the dust out.
Intel's rule from the early 1990s is called Copy Exactly. A new plant must copy everything, even the pipes, and match the old plant's numbers.
TSMC moved its process to Arizona with more than 1,000 workers from Taiwan. The copy's yield came in about four points better than home.
Picture it. Think of a family recipe: the kitchen is not the dish. Move the cook, the pans, the oven and the exact steps, then check the taste before you trust the new kitchen.
Why it matters to you. Before you move any task to a new tool or AI, write down the three numbers the old way produced. Then ask if the new way matches them, not if it runs.

What to do Monday
Match first, trust second. Before you move any task to a new tool or a new AI, write down the three numbers the old way produced: speed, errors, cost, whatever matters to you. Then run the new way on the same work and compare. Do not ask whether the new way runs; ask whether it matches. That is how a chip factory moves a process to a new building, and it is why Intel copies the plumbing.
The honest caveat
A leased cleanroom is still a real head start: buildings, permits and power take years and Ohio's are already under way. Copy Exactly has a cost too; its slowness is one reason people give for TSMC overtaking Intel. And the talks are exploratory: SK hynix says nothing is decided, and the Korean government may review any deal.
